Polish – Ukrainian railway relations. Current status, potential, challenges.

Polish-Ukrainian railway relations. Current status, potential, challenges

The Russian attack on Ukraine has dramatically changed the socio-economic reality. Although the war shook the sense of security of entire societies and industries, it also prompted a broad discussion about the common future of Poland and Ukraine – also in terms of transport. In wartime conditions, the railway has demonstrated that it is an effective and efficient means of transport, irreplaceable especially in extreme and crisis situations. However, once the armed conflict is over (hopefully soon and with a positive outcome for Ukraine), it will also have the chance to play another role – one of the key elements enabling further rapprochement between the two nations, not only in economic terms.

The bilingual report is the result of the work of several transport experts from both Poland and Ukraine. It is the only analysis of its kind, comprehensively presenting the transport situation of Poland’s eastern neighbor, focusing on the current state of integration between the railways of the two countries and also indicating how the problems standing in the way of further strengthening Polish-Ukrainian rail relations can be overcome relatively quickly. The publication also indicates, among other things, the opportunities for domestic infrastructure companies on the Ukrainian market and the barriers that may make it difficult for Polish entities to take part in the future mega-project of rebuilding that country. I hope that our study will be a significant contribution to the public discussion on the future of rail transport between the two countries.
